OpenAI's ChatGPT Agent Is Live: Here's What It Can Now Do That Will Blow Your Mind

In a major upgrade, OpenAI on Thursday launched ChatGPT Agent, an upgrade to its famous ChatGPT resource. ChatGPT Agent enables users to take real-life actions such as coordinating their calendar for meetings and events, meal planning, shopping, travel planning and creation of itineraries, creation of spreadsheets, financials of companies for stocks investments and competitor analysis, to name a few. ChatGPT Agent can therefore be effectively utilized for personal as well as professional needs, including help with high school homework or university projects, to name a few tasks. It can also function from a smartphone and comes with the Interrupt switch for users to take over any task manually.

OpenAI created ChatGPT Agent by synergizing its existing ChatGPT-4o platform with two of its existing tools, Operator and Deep Research.

Operator, an OpenAI tool that was launched earlier this year. Operator is capable of navigating through websites and performing tasks such as filling forms, shopping online or even booking appointments for the user. It uses your web browser interface. Operator is designed to help schedule meetings, give reminders and sync with the calendar, while planning activities using data from the user.

Deep Research was launched in 2024. As the name suggests, Deep Research is capable of searching for websites, news, press releases; compares product pricing and features, analyzing competitors, reading complex financials to provide summaries and more. It can also read blogs and news, find reviews and market trends to help with shopping or making career choices. Additionally, it can help find government rules and regulations in various states or countries and any changes or how they affect the user.

With the combined strengths of ChatGPT-4o, Operator and Deep Research, ChatGPT Agent can sync with the user’s Gmail account, Google Drive, Google Calendar and other compatible online resources including GitHub. For social media users, ChatGPT Agent can help schedule posts, create captions, suggest best time to post and also create posts based on current trends while generating ad copies for promotions and campaigns.

ChatGPT Agent works from a Virtual Machine or a “sandboxed browser” that functions on OpenAI’s secure servers, meaning it doesn’t run on the user’s computer. This reduces the risks of user data and queries being leaked to unauthorized parties.

Meanwhile, users can disengage ChatGPT Agent functions anytime to take control of various delegated functions. ChatGPT Agent will ask users to verify and confirm if they wish to make an irreversible action such as sending email, making a booking or creating a spreadsheet or chart. ChatGPT Agent can’t function on platforms that require two-factor authentication (2FA) as well as secure websites of banks, financial organizations, company servers and other such sensitive portals and servers.

Currently, ChatGPT Agent is available only to ChatGPT Plus users with an upper limit of 40 messages per month, ChatGPT Plus users with upper cap of 400 messages per month, and ChatGPT Team with allocations for every user. ChatGPT free users can’t access ChatGPT Agent.

This AI resource is not available in 31 European countries including member states of the European Union and European Economic Area. OpenAI cites regulatory restrictions as the reason for not being available in these 31 countries. ChatGPT Agent doesn’t fulfil compliance requirements of the European Union Artificial Intelligence Act and General Data Protection Regulation Act of EU member states. This restriction is due to the fact that ChatGPT Agent can interact with external sites and Application Program Interfaces where European regulators demand stricter oversight.
